Alpena Bi-Path [Biking Trail] - The Bi-Path is an urban jewel built by the City of Alpena.  In addition to some nice city- scapes, it features pleasing scenery along Lake Huron and the Thunder Bay River. Almost flat, it is all paved and suitable for all uses and is mostly “dedicated.”  Ten miles plus in length it consists of one great loop and several spurs or connections that add potential distance and variety to the route. Many civic attractions are linked together by the trail. There are also several conveniently spaced parks and potential trailheads along the way with parking and restrooms.  Amenities are numerous in most areas. There are also good opportunities for “loop” rides on local roads that come into or across the bi-path.  As it is a city trail snowmobiles are prohibited.

Alpena to Hillman Trail [Biking Trail] - Also known as the Paxon Spur).  A 22 mile abandoned rail grade recently purchased by the DNR that we expect to be developed in the future.  Currently there is no timetable for development.  In Alpena the trail will connect to the expanding Alpena Bi-Path.

Alpena to Mackinac Trail [Biking Trail] - At 69 miles the Alpena to Cheboygan Trail is the longest in the TOMTC system and also the least developed in many of its segments.  An excellent snowmobile trail in winter, in summer the trail’s heavy ballast and rough gravel make it a challenge for bicyclists.  Some segments however, are bikeable with a mountain or hybrid bike.

City of Alpena Heritage Riverwalk [Walking Tour], 208 N. First Ave., Alpena, MI 49707, Phone: (989) 354-2196.  This historically-oriented walking tour along the Thunder Bay River in downtown Alpena begins at South Riverfront Park (behind the Armory on Water Street), following the river north, crossing over the Ninth Avenue Bridge, then following the river south and ending at South Riverfront Park. The walk includes newly constructed boardwalk as well as integrating a portion of the city’s 13.5 mile Bi-Path. The overall objective of the River Walk is to demonstrate the importance of Lake Huron and the Thunder Bay River in the development of Alpena and its unique maritime culture. The River Walk is being developed in stages, but a good portion of the walk has been laid out and is worthy of a stroll. After visiting South Riverfront Park, where new interpretive signs have been installed, cross Second Avenue to connect with the existing Bi-Path. Follow to Island Mill Park and LaMarre Park, ending at Water Tower Park after crossing the Ninth Avenue Bridge. Continue to North Riverfront park down Oldfield to Pine to Fletcher Street, passing the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center and the Fletcher Street Brewing Company. Cross Second Avenue to North Riverfront Park. You will be across the river from where you began. Walk across the Second Avenue Bridge to return.
